Let’s face it; the idea of documenting Processes is far from exciting. It can be boring, at least for most entrepreneurs. I have worked with hundreds of business owners and none have asked “So…when do we start documenting our processes?”
This is understandable. Why spend the time getting it all organized and documented when there are more important things to do? There are new ideas to be tested, BIG relationships to build and sales to be made!
Here’s the reality. If you want to scale, even a little bit…you must capture your magic. And the only way to capture your magic is to capture and document your Core Processes.
What are Core Processes?
Simply put, they’re the core things you do well that make your company great. Your job is to bottle them so they can be consistently delivered over and over again!
Some typical Core Processes include HR, Sales, Marketing, Operations, Accounting, Customer Retention, etc. These are all the things that come together to make your company relevant and sustainable.
I’m NOT talking about 50 page SOP’s. Instead, I’m referring to the high-level picture, i.e. 20% of the steps that garner 80% of the results.
Let’s take HR for example. Start with the main categories of your process. They may look something like this:
The Search
Interviewing
Hiring
Orientation
Quarterly Conversation
Annual Review
Termination
Add a few sub-bullet points under each category and you have your HR process documented!
Followed By All (FBA)
The final step – and this is important – is to make sure EVERYONE that touches your processes, actually follows them – consistently!
If you document, train and validate adherence to all your core processes, you will create happy customers, loyal employees, and profits that will make you proud!
What are you waiting for? Let’s get them out of your head and onto paper!
