With the July 4th festivities upon us, you may want to take a moment to recognize your business as a symbol of independence and freedom.
America’s small business industry has inspired millions to be free: the freedom to create, take risks and express ideas.
We are free to create solutions to problems (think: Henry Ford and the Model T) and free to create new demand (think: Apple and the iPhone). Businesses like yours feed our economy and show us new ways of doing things better and faster. What other country has cultivated such a profound entrepreneurial spirit?
We have the freedom to take risks. Many people like you started a business with no guarantee of success. In fact, the odds were in favor of failure. But entrepreneurs like you saw failure as an invitation to learn and start over. You sell your ideas, energy and passion every day. Others invest in your ideas, energy and passion every day. That’s the American way!
We embrace the freedom to express ideas. You may be the “boss,” but you know your employees are your secret weapon. You have ideas. They have ideas. Some good — some not — but many are golden. Those ideas, concepts and possibilities are your ticket to personal freedom — to live the life you dreamed and to help your team live theirs. You trust them, embolden them and let them make mistakes. You dream of what’s possible and encourage them to do the same.
Your business is what America stands for: Freedom.
So, as you celebrate America’s independence on this Fourth of July, don’t forget to acknowledge your business and your employees. Together, you have helped shape the character and spirit of our country. For that, I salute you!
